The City of Hartwell is located in the Center of Hart County, GA close the Lake Hartwell, Georgia. The population fluctuates based on the seasonality of vacationers to Lake Hartwell. Hartwell is covered by the City Council and their meetings are held once per month. The public is welcome to attend.

Hartwell's Downtown District is a nationally recognized "Main Street" Program. In fact, in 2023, Hartwell was named "Georgia's Downtown of the Year".
